Munich based video podcast Isarrunde has applied for being accepted as a legitimate German broadcasting channel with their Twitter channel.

Michael Praetorius handed over the the official form to Martin Gebrande, Managing Director of the Bayerische Landeszentrale für Neue Medien BLM — a federal state media authority. The application does not refer to Isarrunde’s video or audio content but to it’s Twitter channel, exclusively .

As seen in the video, Mr Gebrande promised to check whether Isarrunde’s Twitter channel qualifies for a broadcasting outlet. If the BLM ratifies this application, Isarrunde will be charged a EUR 5,000 fee.
Accordingly, the BLM would have to act as a media watchdog and watch Isarrunde’s Twitter Channel closely. Should Isarrunde violate Bavaria’s broadcasting regulations, the BLM would have to take appropriate steps against Isarrunde.

The reason for Isarrunde’s application is to clarify whether Internet channels with a realtime approach have to be seen as a broadcasting programme. This had been indicated by Bavaria’s Prime Minister, Mr Horst Seehofer, who told the audience in his opening address of Medientage München, a media conference, that the internet has to be seen as broadcasting. Mr Gebrande qualified Mr Seehofer’s claim during a panel dicussion: broadcasting is a linear media with a suggestive effect. Additionally, online outlets as web radios or webTV stations only qualify as broadcasters if they reach 500 or more users via their streams. In consequence, Isarrunde’s Twitter channel — as well as every other Twitter channel with more than 500 followers — would qualify as a broadcaster.

By applying for the status of a broadcaster, Isarrunde fulfills its duty as a potential broadcaster.
Isarrunde is a production of Michael Praetorius, Dr. Benedikt Köhler, Michael Reuter, Christoph Elzer and Anatol Locker.

1. Know what you are talking about. If you are going to work with social media, be involved in social media. Start your own Twitter account, Facebook page, read blogs and get engaged. That is the best way to understand the culture, tone, best practices, and protocol.

2. Always be transparent. When you are communicating in social media say who you are and who you work for. Don’t try to be sneaky and plant comments, don’t hire people to go out and say nice things about you and stay away from ghost writing. Be genuine and be real.

3. Be yourself. Readers can see through marketing talk. Be passionate about what you do and let that show through your personality. Let people see you as a person, not a mouthpiece.

4. Post frequently. It’s a lot of work but don’t post to your blog then leave it for two weeks. Readers won’t have a reason to follow you on Twitter or check your blog if they can’t expect new content regularly.

5. Add value. Share tips, tricks, and insights. People’s time is precious and they need to get something out of the time they spend with you. Make listening to you worth their time.

6. Respond. Answer questions, thank people even if it’s just a few words. Make it a two way conversation.

7. Listen to what others have to say. Appreciate suggestions and feedback, it will make what you do even better.

8. Learn from your mistakes. Don’t be afraid to say you were wrong and be quick to make changes when you are.

9. Be external. You don’t have to be 100% internally focused. Link to other blogs, videos, and news articles. Re-tweet what others have to say.

10. Have fun. If you don’t like what you are doing, others will notice it and won’t enjoy interacting with you.

Now I want to to complete the description of this experiment with more qualitative results. First, this is how my new Saeco Aroma, the Gastroback coffee mill, the beans, milled at medium grade, and the final espresso look like:

The espresso itself has a nice crema — as you can see — it comes at a very good temperature, and with a beautiful taste.

Next thing to do is to compare different espresso beans in combination with different milling grades.

I’m a big fan of word-of-mouth and even recommendation engines often produce relevant and valuable results. But no recommendation engine will beat this recommendation network — formerly known as microblogging tool — named Twitter.

Besides quite a few stories told by friends I happened to learn about the social recommendation power of Twitter myself: A day before the Easter holidays my espresso machine decided to pass away. She had a good life of roughly 15 years, visited hospital just three times and served us well. R.I.P.

After getting used to an espresso partner it is difficult to realign yourself. So what should I do? Screen hundreds of reviews on the net or ask some Italian barista for advice? None of the two: I submitted a tweet to my gentle followers, asking them for their advice regarding an espresso (not coffee!) machine for less than 600 Euros.

Half a day later I had eight answers, public replies and direct messages. Six of those came with links to and recommendations of individual machines. All of them matched my conditions (espresso/not coffee, less than 600 Euros). Additionally they (correctly) implied that the machine should a bargain; i.e. it should produce good espresso at a reasonable price tag. In their recommendations my followers even offered reasons for not recommending other machines, as “will not recommend my own xyz because it’s error-prone”.

Provided with these links I ran through the machine’s descriptions and ordered one of those including an additional coffee mill the same night with amazon. It arrived 24 hours later and my wife and our friends are more than satisfied with the results which are not optimized yet.

Twitter as Social Recommendation Network: within 12 hours twitter provided me with my follower’s recommendations, which

- came within hours

- matched my criteria

- provided additional information and

- best price links.

Far from being representative this individual experience should make us think about the recommendation power an application like twitter has. I will use this social recommendation network more often an will try to provide my expertise if needed. Let’s see which applications and business models will follow…
