Ideas are cheap — most of them not worth a second thought. Approaching a short Easter break in times of Coronavirus — what could be better than brainstorming on some ideas lying around. That said, I invite you to collaborate and comment on this brain fodder: DAO — Brainstorming On Decentralised Autonomous Organisations.

A DAO is a Decentralised Autonomous Organisation — a network comprised of several, if not many, individual entities — or: nodes — that have agreed on working together on some specific purpose. The basis for their work is a set of rules, a so-called governance model. This governance model not only defines the rules and processes of the DAO but also comes with an implemented incentivization scheme that incentivizes each node to actively participate in the network.

DAO — Brainstorming On Decentralised Autonomous Organisations

As of 2020, there are several blockchain protocols providing software and governance to create DAOs. My goal for today is to get your feedback on the below mentioned specific DAO ideas — or: applications if you will.

DARFT

Decentralised Autonomous Request for Tender

There is a Request for Tender RFT process

A smart contract defines the complete RFT process

All participants are provided with user interfaces for input and output of their respective data

Approval criteria for each step of the process are programmed in the smart contract that automatically decides about reaching the next step for each participant

Financial transactions due to individual steps of the process are automatically triggered and payments are sent to the participants

After the final round, the winner is selected based on the approval rates received in each round

The winner receives the payment and a briefing for the first milestone

DACOMMS

Decentralised Autonomous Communications

There are content owners with the need to communicate their contents

Content owners use the DACOMMS to decentralize their communications

Content owners publish a job; i.e. content they want to be communicated, incl. a budget (metrics-based, e.g.number of redirected visitors, leads, etc.)

Potential communicators apply for this job by providing their credentials; i.e. brand, website, Online/Social Media reach (based on public metrics provided by respective services)

Communicators are selected based on the criteria programmed in the smart contract initially provided by the content owner

The job is opened to every communicator meeting the requirements described in the smart contract

Communicators start with their work and report the results back to the smart contract

The job ends as soon as the budget is consumed

Communicators automatically receive payments according to their performances

These are two very basic ideas around DAOs. I have not thought them through in detail, yet. Please tell me what you think about these DAO ideas. Do you feel that I better should forget about them, or do you think both ideas or one of them should be worked on? Then let’s collaborate!

Thank you for your feedback!

During winter, it sometimes snows in Germany, even in the climate change-raddled 21st century. In the first weeks of January 2019, we are experiencing heavy snowfalls — a weather condition that results in a variety of effects, from the impossibility to bike to work, over flight cancellations, or accidents. to snowball fights and deep powder skiing. We’re experiencing the beauty of snow — and — that A snowflake never falls in the wrong place.

Weather is a phenomenon beyond the reach of human beings. It is broadly predictable but unforeseeable in its details: what exactly does a 40% rain probability mean? Will we be able to play tennis? Weather is a perfect topic to start within conversations since it unites people: lots of fresh snow forces house owners to clear it early in the morning and finding ways of not banking it up in their neighbor‘s driveways. While many adults feel stressed since heavy snowfall forces them to change plans, get late to work, etc., most kids enjoy throwing snowballs, go sledding, or simply savor snowflakes falling on their faces.

I personally love heavy snowfall: it forces people to change their plans, to think differently, to find alternatives: work from home, skip the ride to the mall, reschedule your meetings. From neuroscience, we know that changing routine behaviors from time to time has tremendously positive effects on the human brain that is able to rewire its neurons which are called neuroplasticity, and on our mental abilities in general. However, human beings don‘t like changing their behavior. We mostly do it when being forced to. That‘s where snowfalls come into play.

A snowflake never falls in the wrong place

One of my favorite Zen proverbs — A snowflake never falls in the wrong place — adds another dimension — time: it combines the symbolic snow and human subjectivity, and therewith leads us to question the value of the events of our past and the judgments we tend to make about them. By changing plans, we are forced to try new ways and see where they lead us to. In most cases, that could simply result in realizing that taking the subway is more efficient than using the car. Or, you experience that working from home is more efficient than being present at the office and you plan to ask your boss about the idea to agree upon one day of the home office.

Then, there are are other, more subtle, characteristics of snow. A closed snow cover has a great visual effect: it lights up the night sky, and even during an otherwise grey winter day, the snow‘s glimmer adds to a more positive atmosphere. Compare that to grey-black rain-soaked roads! Additionally, to the visual effect, there is an audio effect. If you live near a road with some traffic, you know — during winter — if there is a snow cover on the roads because you don‘t hear the cars, or at least they sound softened, or quilted. Since I am somewhat allergic to perpetual noise, I really appreciate the cushioning effect of snow here.

Let it snow!

Isn’t that fantastic? 50,000 women have — voluntarily — got pregnant in the last 18 months with the help of an app! At least this is what fertility startup Ovuline’s CEO Paris Wallace said this week.
The Ovia fertility app has been downloaded 300,000 times and users are adding 1 million data points every two and a half days. This makes Ovuline’s fertility panel the largest in the world.
In the big data world, the more data a company has about users, the more more accurately it can predict their behavior. In Ovuline’s case this means, the company helps to guide women through their pregnancy. Users of the app know when they’re fertile or, in the case of its new pregnancy and they get instant feedback (which is something many other quantified-self apps still fail to do). For instance, the app can tell a woman whether her specific ache is normal and what percentage of other women also have it during this phase of their pregnancy.
Many people, especially here in Germany, are wondering about any privacy implications of using quantified-self apps. My pretty simple take on that is: as long as you are not personally affected; i.e. you talk about doing sth. ‘in theory’, you miss the case when stressing privacy concerns. If you are a woman with a strong desire to have a child, and you can choose between a long and strenuous fertility therapy, or using apps like Ovia, Glow, Clue or Kindara — you won’t think twice!
And fertility is just one use case of many. Not being able to get children is really bad, but being able to prevent the next heart attack is even more important. At this point, let me quote QS co-founder Gary Wolf: “Self-quantifying will become a social responsibility.”
Women using a fertility app act autonomously and do not wait for — or have to trust in — external support by some fertility therapies. The new paradigm of the Quantified Self is that the individual can act and change things herself. It enables human beings to care for themselves. For me, this is the most important aspect of QS.
The photo was made on a party with beautiful kids (and their parents).
